Did you know that Austria was once a horological powerhouse and that its longstanding rulers, the Habsburgs, had a preferred timekeeper? Carl Suchy & Söhne was the poster child of Austrian watchmaking, with multiple family members serving as Royal Purveyor to the Imperial Court from 1844 all the way through the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918. Pocket watches, table clocks, wrist watches, and all – the aristocratic apparatus of the empire, as well as its scientific elite, relied on Suchy craftsmanship with confidence.
In 2016, Carl Suchy & Söhne was revived by CEO Robert Punkenhofer in the hopes of restoring the once great Austrian watchmaker while also paying tribute to the architectural and art renaissance, Viennese Modernism, that took place during the empire’s late stages. Back in October, I had the pleasure of interviewing Robert while crafting a wholesome guide on CSS for Collective Horology, California’s (and the nation’s) premier independent watch brand retailer. This guide is an adventure that is equal parts historical and forward-looking, and it shows off all the timepieces that have come before as well as today’s modern creations.
